Get good plugs and wires not the cheapest crap. Alsoo OEM motorcraft wires are actually good.

Tempo has 8mm wires stock. Upgrade to Accel cap and rotor. Upgrade to MSD coil and MSD or Accel ignition control module. Once you do this use a timing light and disconnect PIP and losing bolt to dizzy. Advance timing 6 to 8 degrees as loong as theres no sign of detonation. Slowly ggive it throttle to verify timing advances with acceliration. Tighten down dizzy bolt.

Plug PIP back in. K next take the air intake resenator/silencer off the intake. Leave it off.

Next remove your catalytic convert and tubing to it. U dont need it.

Tempo

Its OBD1 and only has a upstream O2 sensor so wont throw a code at u. Recycle the catalytic converter and use the money to buy a inexpensive muffler.

Thrush/Cherrybomb turbo style muffler or glasspack what ever fits your fancy. Next install the muffler where the cat was instead of the rear whhere it was origianlly. This will allow it to sound more throaty. Go to exhaust shop to get some pipe to add to rear to make the pipe factory length again. U can add a resonator tip if u want. Wont gain power but will make it sound nicer.

Now u have covered the basic inexpensive stuff to gain better fuel economy and a tad bit power u really need to get rid of the automatic. The auto is basically a 3 speed with OD and doesnt have eenough gearing.

Slap a MTXIII 5 speed in it. Ok now drain all the tranny fluid out. Theres no drain hole the fill hole on top is the drain so u have to either suck it out from top or while tranny is out of car flip it upside down to drain. Dont use gear oil. It takes ATF. Use royal purple syncromax its speced for manuals that call for ATF and its synthetic and does help the MTX series trannies.

For the bad news a upgraded clutch is only a centerforce unit thats designed to hold 90% more power so u should never kill it unless u cant drive a stick correctly. Problem is that it sounds really great but it cost $500 for the Tempo/Topez. Now by now you cylinder head probably needs freshning up.

U have the 2.3L OHV motor right? Now take the head to be rebuilt at machine shop. Get a basic 3 angle valve job with slightly larger intake valves. Have them clean up the intake ports but dont polish it smooth. Go ahead and have exhause port done smooth. Exhaust side on these heads are shitty and why they dont makee good power.

Ok now go get a set of Ford 460 big block rockers and have the head done to accept the pedestal mounts these require. These rockers have a higher lift ratio so will actually be like adding a slightly higher lift cam. Second option would be order some billet or regular alum what ever ur budget will allow roller rockers and have them machines to mount and have custom valve springs made and a custom cam. If your gonna do the turbo routte them lift isnt the most important factor in the cam specs, duration and overlap make the most of forced induction. Factory injectors are 14lbs but unless you are making substantial gains dont go waisting ur money on bigger injectors it will just make ur engine run like garbage and you will have tons of unburned fuel coming out the tailpipe. Goodluck. Brandon answered 3 years ago A exhaust ain't gonna get you the power you want. Stock ecu ain't gonna do it either.

Either way your looking at custom ecu. So for your goals your looking at probably no less than $5000 in mods and that's if you do it your self.

Manual

If paying someone to do it your looking at $10,000+. Is it worth it to you? You can pick up a used modified mustang for $5k and have more power stock. Not dissing, I got a 94 tempo with a 2.3L and five speed that's mildy modified and fun as hell. If you got the 3.0l v6 with a 5 speed than your almost there already. Remember the 92-94 2.3l only made 96 HP and the HO version vmade a whopping 98hp so making another 100hp, basically doabling the HP is gonna take work. These engines were made to be tough and durable not HP.

No aftermarket either. So you wanna make HP I will tell you what you need to do. Number one is ditch that POS automatic. Get a standard.

You can't drive standard you say? To bad you need to learn cause that cause that crappy Lil three speed auto always gonna be sluggish. OK so now you got a Manuel? Guess what no rebuild kit for the MTX tranny. Brandon answered 3 years ago A exhaust ain't gonna get you the power you want. Stock ecu ain't gonna do it either. Guess what no rebuild kit for the MTX tranny. So better save up cash for a bunch of used 5 speeds and rebuild one out of bunch of used parts.

Next find a tranny out llof a mercury topez sport or tempo sport and pull the diff gear ou. Brandon answered 3 years ago A exhaust ain't gonna get you the power you want.

Brandon answered 3 years ago Think highway gears vs race gears. We haven't even got to engine yet. Next you need a better clutch. OK so center force makes a clutch with 90% more holding capacity which could work for a bit with the HP numbers you want but the clutch kit cost $500. OK so we got tranny took care of so far. FYI still open diff.

K so engine wise, here we go. You need to do a whole one off engine rebuild. Custom everything for motor. Your turbo gonna want to be a full ball nearing t3/t4 hybrid. Quick spool with good top end boost capabilities. You wanna run at least 12 psi for decent HP gain but good gai s gonna want 20psi.

So I need to build a motor able to withstand that pressure which is not easy with a motor with no aftermarket support. Gonna want custom forged pistons with a compression ratio of no more than 8.5 which is still pushing it since these motors are old school cast iron so look for 8.0 cr.

Now bottom end. No one makes forged crank or forged rods. Rods are easy enough to get made. Probably looking at$500 or more for rods. Crank is another story. No one gonna make you a forged crank. They will make you a billet crank which is stronger but look at spending about $2000 for it.

Also you gotta supply the specs for it which is a lot of work in it self. K so you got a the crank, rods, pistons, turbo. Fye the turbo with specs mentioned is gonna be $1200 for say a turbonetics unit based on a garret.

Yes there are $100 China clones on eBay that MAY work for a tiny while. K so we still got gaskets. No one makes a gasket to withstand those pressures. So look at at least $250 for a custom head gasket and that's if you can get someone to make one.

Your gonna want a o ringed multi layered Steen gasket with the appropriate cylinder head machining to accept said gasket. K so now we need custom head bolts that no one makes so contact company like ARP and hope they have a head bolt set that will work for another $150 at least and if now throw bucks at them to make some and that's probably gonna cost another $100 to get them to produce one custom batch for you. Also you gotta convince them to make you some crank and rod bolts and any other high pressure bolts for you. Loom at no less than $1500 for bolts. K so you got this bad boy all built guess what? You got a beast of a iron four banger that's gonna heat up like a over filled not belly stove so how you gonna cool it?

A five o mustang radiator will take car of it on HP stand point if you want to go cheap routtw bit now you gotta modify the rad support to fit it. Also need a electric fan to blow enough air. Ditch that 195 thermostats for a lower one also no one make a high flow water pump. So call around for a custom unit that flows just enough as a five o or more so look at at least another $500 if you can get anyone to do it. Remember custom castings equal huge dollars.

K we done with cooling. So how are toy gonna get that turbo mounted? You need a turbo manifold. Got a welder? K no prob tly can fab JP a cheap basic manifold. So your motor is in and its ready to run right?

Nope turn it on now and your motor gonna run crazy lean at idle and blow up. Cause the stock ford EEC went crazy and doesn't know what to do and you got stock injectors and your still sporting the stock for mad sensors. You need approriot injectors. Ditch the mad sensors for a map sensor. So good right? Nope engine won't run.

Cause stock computer needs mad not map so you need at least a piggyback unit. Good luck cheaper to goindepwndant ecu unit. K $1500 for the unit plus additional sensors like crank position and map.

Hope you can install your self. Another $1200 for install. K its installed.wait you need custom maps and dyno time beat have another $1000 for that. K now your done.

Wait we haven't even mentioned custom cam, headwork, valve springs, etc. Even haven't mentioned suspension upgrades. Brake upgrades. You get the point? There's more to it then this. I just scratch the surface. Everyone watches TV or movies and thinks they can build a ultra HP cat for cheap but without aftermarket and not being rich and just have money to throw at it you can't without taking years and years to build it.

Even then your gonna have people who think wow a tempo with 200hp that's kinda cool but why? My self thinks its epic since it is a tempo and anyone can bolt ahit to a stang and get 400hp. Plus tempi is light as hell so if you can get traction a 200hp tempo will eat a 300hpbstang beasily anytime of the day.
