The key barrel on a friends 2001 Toyota Corolla 1.3 VVT-i has worn out and is getting hard to unlock the car, its worse in cold weather where the key will just not unlock this door at all and the passenger door has to be used. There is no remote function with this car so he wanted to replace the part.
A new replacement barrel was ordered from the dealers and it was fitted to the car. Its not too hard to change, just a bit tricky to get the camera into the door.

However one problem i experienced was the captive nut that holds the barrel to the door handle had come out of the handle and was spinning, it had to be removed and i had to remove the door handle and glue the nut back into place with araldite. Getting the handle out was a bit more work than expected as the fittings that hold the various conneting rods can be hard to undo. However changing the barrel isnt too difficult, and the door now locks and unlocks without a problem, but i might fit an aftermarket remote central locking kit to the car in the future to avoid wear to the key barrel.
