Needles to say, I did not pass. My score was 130. My GPA is a 3.5.

I felt totally unprepared for this exam. I purchased a book and a friend also gave me an old book for studying, but NOTHING seemed relevant to this new version of the exam. Can anyone recommend some useful study materials or any website (legitimate) that may offer tutoring for this exam? There is nothing available near me where I live. Thanks in advance for any and all help! Innnovationguy, who used to post pretty regularly here, offers help for California's challenging single-subject math test, and I'm sure he can figure out the math that you need.

He has suggested a number of print resources that can also be helpful. Here's another approach: Using the Content Category Descriptions in the Test Companion, identify areas in which you're less than confident. Then investigate those areas using a combination of Khan Academy, Wolfram MathWorld, Math Is Fun (if the Web site comes up 'mathsisfun', don't panic: Jenny Eather is Aussie, I think), purplemath, lesson plans online on the topic that has you stuck, and even Wikipedia.

Thanks in advance for any and all help! Click to expand.I just passed the 5161 last week with just 6 weeks of studying after being away from math for about 8 years. I only took 1 math class in college, and a lot of the material on the praxis was brand new to me.

It was an extremely grueling 6 weeks, but it is possible to learn and practice enough to pass just with books and online tutorials. I worked out of 2 books, mostly for questions on their practice tests. It's difficult to understand the material straight out of the review chapters, unless you have a solid base understanding to begin with, or you're very literate in all the various notations. Here are the books I used: REA Praxis II Mathematics Content Knowledge (0061/5061) LearningExpress Complete Test Preparation Praxis II: Mathematics (0065 and 5161) The first book is based on the 5061 (a previous version of the test,) but the material is all the same. The practice tests in these books were probably a little more difficult on average than those on the actual test, but they are a pretty good representation of what you can expect.

Between those two books (and the online material they give you access to,) there are a total of 6 full practice tests. By FAR the most valuable resources were Khan Academy and PatrickJMT youtube videos. Their channels are full of hundreds of videos that take you through just about every concept you need to know. I was working off of these videos constantly, and I know I wouldn't have been able to pass without them. The Khan Academy website also has programs with practice problems and mini-lessons to get you additional practice on whatever you need help with.

I would recommend working on the problems in the practice tests as you learn the material, instead of saving them to test yourself later. Maybe save one full test to actually take as a serious timed practice run before the real thing. Make sure your algebra skills are very sharp, and know as much about functions as you can. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask and I'll check back and answer if I can.

To the original poster: I also found the study material subpar. I failed in NJ by 1 question.

My biggest issue was time management. I still had about 15 problems with 15 minutes to go. The earlier advice about Khan and other sources is good. I would also recommend you find different tests (AP Calc, MTel, California's version, etc.

And do a lot of them.) You need to know the concepts and how to compare different formulas. In a happy mood because I recently passed a different Praxis test!
